The RCA Digital Converter Box with DVR Recording itself does not record. IT requires a USB external drive sold separate.

I use a 64 GB USB, One hour of program is about 8GB. So far I have no problems recording Two or Three hour programs.
The manual says you can use a external hard drive. Just do the math.
As fast forwarding is just like my DVD Player. You can fast forwarding, stop or pause.

According to comments from a YouTube video review if you format the USB flash drive using NTFS there are no time limitations on your files. The actual record time vs. file size is given on the RCA website.

The amount of space used when it records is dependent on the input signal&#39;s pixel count per video frame. For me a 1920 x 1080 pixel HD signal uses about 4GB per hour. I have seen the 8GB per hour mentioned, but I have not seen that in practice. SD signals use a lot less space.

I would recommend formatting your external USB drive and USB flash drive using NTFS. The DTA880 converter box only knows how to read and write FAT32 and NTFS disks. If you use Fat32 and your video file exceeds 2GB, the recorded output file will be split into multiple parts/files. This is not a problem if you just play them back on the converter box. However, if you plug the USB drive into your computer, video player software may not be able to handle those split files. The VLC media player doesn&#39;t, for example. It will only play the first 2GB part.

Yes!....But a sandisk 3.0 flash drive is best!

I purchased the DTA880 in the Walmart store and am using a 16GB PNY flash drive to record. The PNY is labeled compatible with XP, 2000, Vista, Windows 7 and Mac OS 8.6 and better. My PNY flash drive is a USB 2.0 drive. I&#39;ve had no issues and am happy to be cable free.

I just started using this. I had a 3.0 PYN brand turbo thumb drive. When I tried to record a High Def channel like CBS it would have &quot;skips&quot; in the video you could see during playback. There would be about 1 second of info missing about every 30 seconds or so. I read on an online forum to ditch the thumb drive and use a usb hard drive, because the thumb drives are not meant for this purpose. So I bought a 1TB Seagate for $60 at Best Buy and now it works perfectly. No more &quot;skipping&quot;. So save yourself time and money and just buy the hard drive to start with. Plus with 1TB of storage you can record hours and hours of content. Bye bye cable company!

USB 3.0 may be needed for 1080i transmissions.

I used a SanDisk 64 gb   CRUZER 2.0/3.0 compatible. Works perfect with perfect clarity at 1080i. Check the signal strength using the INFO Button (twice). If you have less than 70% signal, move your antenna. The choppiness people describe is most likely channel fade.  My SanDisk cost 14.99 and works great!

Well, I am trying to find out the protocol, also! Manuel said DVR. WILL IT PLAYBACK ON ANDROID DEVICES!

USB plugs into side. in menu The last box on the top has a picture of a USB stick. scroll to this and hit OK then scroll down and hit OK on the show you want to watch.. u tube has videos if you need help. they will walk you through the process.

I just bought this and did quick recording without looking for any options (i.e. default). The Video Format is *.mts I have never heard if this but VLC Media Player plays it fine (Windows XP Media Player doesn&#39;t). Finally, I plugged USB Flash Drive into my Samsung HDTV and it played perfectly -- so I am happy. Now I just need to figure out out to schedule recordings

The unit is very easy to set up and use and its worth the price, better than being over charged by cable companies.

Works great, although the user manual is very scant ... and online documentation is hard to find except for YouTube videos and some videos at the RCA site. It would be nice to have some more detailed info, especially about the subject of deleting channels and time recording, etc.   But, as one reviewer has already said, if you try onscreen choices and experiment a bit, you'll figure it out.

Great little DVR

OK cable is expensive and I had to cut back. So I brought this rca converter. Just hoping for a couple of channels. I got way more. Only down fall is I don't get the NBC network. Now I can say not all converters are the same the second one I bought I only got 3channels I took that back and got another rca. It is so easy to connect just remember to pick up an antenna also and that doesn't need to be expensive for this to work. I would recommend this product.

easy to connect

The unit was very easy to hookup. A lot of people complained about the buttons being to small to use but I have XL size hands and have no problems. I like the epg which is the channel guide button it work great. I have added a 128 gb USB device to the side of the unit and have had no problems recording or watching the shows I recoded. Excellent product and performs better than advertised.

RCA  Digital Converter Box

Purchased online about a week ago.. Very pleased & satisfied.! So many features & will try to make this brief touching on some key functions.. Unit is compact & solidly built.. Uses a 12v DC power adapter from wall.. NO obnoxious lights or distractions on the face of unit., just 2 tiny red & green leds in left corner.. All info is shown on-screen.. The channel scan (am using an amplified indoor window antenna) is very quick & has a signal strength meter.. Much quicker then the tuner in my Magnavox 32" led tv.. Tunes the same 44 channels the tv does.. I notice signal strength is a tad stronger thru the RCA Tuner compared to tv tuner.. Channel guide & program listing/descriptions are shown (IF the broadcasting station is transmitting one).. Main menu is easy to access & use for various tuner/dvr settings using remote.. Is HD & Dolby stereo reception.. SAP & CC as well.. All menu., settings & channel info are clearly seen on the tv screen.. Easy on the eyes..
I mainly purchased for the DVR function since VCRs can't be used these days w/new digital signals.. It uses a USB Flash Stick inserted on right side of box for recording.. Memory stick can be formatted right from the dvr.. The on-screen schedule is very straight-forward.. No bells or whistles., basic & clear setup like a vcr.. Once & daily recording.. FFWD & REW up to 32x speed buzzes right thru commercials.. Playback is just as if watching it live.!
Remote is nicely laid out & labeled BUT it is so small.. Is only drawback & con of the unit.. Channel recall., faves., mute., volume., play., record., menu etc etc.. Uses a round lithium battery., included.. Also included are RCA cables to hook box to tv..
Instructions are decent.. THO the print is very small.. Eyes not the best will need a magnify glass of some sort as I did..
2 things I do recommend.. Using the HDMI port from box to tv if possible.. The RCA cables do well but found at times the audio was just slightly off from the screen for some programs.. HDMI cable connection cured that issue & even brings out the video more crisper.. It has standard coax in/out connections but I do not use.. Also., invest in a good brand USB 3.0 memory stick (tho USB 2.0 can be used).. The 3.0 increases read/write speeds greatly over standard USB 2.0.. More fluent video & audio using USB 3,0 (formatted NTFS).. The amount that can be recorded depends on the size of memory stick.. For easy math you can figure from this., an hour program (60min) uses 1.985gig.. I purchased along w/the RCA Tuner/DVR a Centon Essential 128gig USB 3.0 stick.. 34$ thru Walmart.. I recently reviewed it & gave it 5-stars.. Works gr8.!
Overall., once again I state that am very pleased & satisfied w/this purchase.. Tv viewing is a passion & the investment is well worth it.. For hopefully many many years of use.. RCA Digital Tuner / DVR box

This is the best converter box that I got. I has to look up to get a proper HD antenna for my area, I didn't know at the time that different HD antennas gets different results, I had to go with one that will get most of my favorite channels, but my old converter box pulls only about 7 channels, and the one I got pulls almost 21 channels, sweet!
Definitely recommended for people on hard to get channels area, but do your homework first so you could decided which HD antennas that you want to use, and remember that they all pulls channels differently, but not all channels, just choose the one you think will do for you.

It the best converter box ever!

this unit does all functions as advertised. the only negative is the remote! I read the reviews and expected a very small size unit but my complaint is a lack of sensitivity. If the button is not pushed straight down, you will have to reenter the command.

does the job

Easy to hook up and brought in 14 local channels using a 50 year old rooftop antenna array.  Great picture either live or recorded. The DVR feature takes a little getting used to about what it will and will not do (think VCR).   The only weakness is the remote.  It sometimes takes several button pushes  before the box will respond, even if you aim it right at the box from 3 feet away.  Fix that and it's a 5 star unit.

It Works!

This RCA converter does what it is supposed to do if you will get no further than 3 feet away from it; otherwise, it can't read the remote. I don't know if this is a receiver issue or if it's the teeny-tiny, worthless remote that comes with it. The remote is smaller than a cell phone. The buttons are so tiny and it has to be pointed so close to the converter box that I think "remote" is the wrong term for this device. If I have to get up to use the "remote" then it isn't remotely useable.  I went online to see if I could use a universal remote, but the verdict is that it won't convert.  Converter box does its job. Remote is not designed well.
