Blue Lizard sunscreen lotions are oil and water emulsions that separate over time, similar to vinaigrette salad dressing, which needs to be shaken up. Certain conditions accelerate separation, such as storage in an uncontrolled environment with significant temperature fluctuations (like a garage) or exposure to extreme heat (like in a car).

Vigorous shaking should reform the emulsion without negatively impacting the product quality. Do not pour off or only use the “liquid” portion, as this may negatively impact sunscreen coverage on your skin.

Broad spectrum means the sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

UVA is known to contribute to wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer, including melanoma.

UVB is known to cause sunburns and can also play a role in developing skin cancer and early skin aging.

Yes! Because sunscreen ingredients can degrade and become less effective over time, the FDA requires all sunscreens to have expiration dates. Expiration dates can be found along the top edge of Blue Lizard tubes and on the bottom of Blue Lizard Sprays, Sticks, and Lip Balm.

Yes, all Blue Lizard Sunscreen products provide broad spectrum coverage for UVA and UVB protection.

The FDA sets the standard for sunscreen water resistance claims in the United States. The FDA does not allow any sunscreen to claim that it is “waterproof,” “sweat-proof,” or capable of providing “all-day protection.” Our SPF 50 sunscreen sticks, sprays, and lotions and our SPF 15 Lip Balm are water resistant for 80 minutes (the highest water resistance claim allowed by the FDA).

Blue Lizard Sunscreen should be applied to dry skin at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure. Always remember to reapply at least every two hours (more frequently if swimming or sweating). Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating.

Of course! Sunscreen should be applied to dry skin, so always allow your moisturizer to fully absorb before applying sunscreen. To ensure full-strength sun protection, our sunscreen should also be rubbed in and allowed to dry before applying makeup.

Parents should consult with their pediatrician before using any sunscreen on a child younger than 6 months. For children older than 6 months, we recommend our Baby or Sensitive products to minimize the risk of skin sensitivity.

Every Blue Lizard Sunscreen contains Zinc Oxide, an FDA-approved mineral sunscreen ingredient that provides broad spectrum protection of UVA and UVB rays. Our Baby, Kids, Sensitive, Sport and Sheer Face lotions also contain Titanium Dioxide, another FDA-approved mineral sunscreen ingredient.

Baby, Kids, Sensitive, Sheer Body, Sheer Face, and Sport lotions are oil/water emulsions. Sensitive Face is a water gel formulation.

Once the sunscreen is used up, Blue Lizard Spray aluminum canisters and Stick plastic components are recyclable. Blue Lizard Sheer Face, Sensitive Face, and Sheer Body cartons are also recyclable. Our plastic tubes are not recyclable. However, all our tubes are made with at least 35% post-consumer recycled content (PCR) to reduce the amount of virgin plastic we use in our packaging.
