Yes, Sargento Cheeses are perishable dairy products and should always be stored in the fridge.

Most Sargento® natural cheeses are made with non-animal rennet, making them vegetarian friendly. We use animal rennet when crafting traditional Italian style cheeses such as Romano, Provolone, and Asiago. We vary the type of rennet we use for each cheese to deliver the best taste and quality.

The milk used to make all Sargento cheese products is pasteurized.

Sargento® cheeses are derived from farmer certified non-rbST treated cows. Please note that no significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST-treated cows.

Mold can develop on cheese once the product is exposed to air. Sargento identifies all products with a freshness date. This date assures freshness in an unopened package only. Once the package is opened and the cheese is exposed to air, there is always the potential for mold to develop. For this reason, we recommend using our cheese within 5 days of opening.

Powdered cellulose is a white, odorless, tasteless powder made from cellulose, a naturally occurring component of most plants. It’s turned into a very fine white powder and can be from a variety of plant sources. It’s not derived from wheat, rye, barley, or their cross-bred hybrids. We use powdered cellulose and/or potato starch as anti-caking agents on our cheese. When added to cheese, they prevent it from sticking together.

Fine Cut shredded cheese has a greater surface area, so it melts more quickly, perfect for high melt dishes like quesadillas or loaded baked potatoes, or as a salad topper. Whereas Sargento Traditional Cut shredded cheese leads to more defined cheese texture when melted, great for traditional baked dishes such as mac & cheese, quiche, or lasagna.

Our Sargento® Ultra-Thin® Cheeses are thinly sliced compared to our “traditional” style slices. Thin slices allow you to accomplish a faster melt or a lighter sandwich whereas our traditional deli style slices provide a fuller cheese coverage on your burger, Ruebens, or clubs.

Sargento cheese will be fresh in an unopened package stored properly until the date listed, after the best by date we cannot guarantee the quality of the product matches our Sargento family standards.

For the best balance of melt and flavor, try combining one slice of American with one slice of cheddar. You’ll get the creamy melt of American cheese with the sharper, fuller flavor of cheddar.
