This impressive disk adapter turned out better than I expected. It will interface with standard USB-A 2.0/3.0/3.1 ports on a PC or USB-C on a late model smart phone, I tried both and could read the drive from a Windows 10 computer and my Android 8.1 phone. The SATA connection on the Plugable adapter will hot swap 2.5" or 3.5" hard disks or 2.5" solid state drives in sizes up to 8GB. Performance is much quicker than the USB 2.0 backup drive that I also own. Actual throughput depends on the type of drive that you plug into the SATA slot, and the speed of the PC or phone that's connected to it. Hot swap capability means that you can change hard drives without restarting. The ability to change drives easily expands functionality and can be used for home or business backups, or as a boot drive to run a separate operating system such as Ubuntu or Debian Linux. Even with this capability it's easy to set up for simple storage and backup tasks. Configuration is automatic except that the drive you plug into it must be formatted with a compatible filesystem for the operating system that you are running. Two USB cords and an AC adapter are included.

The Plugable Thunderbolt Docking station is in essance a large hub that expands the number of ports that your computer has. The docking station contains five USB ports. Four are in the rear and one is in the front which makes it easy to pop in a data stick without any trouble and the front also has a microphone/headphone plug that is easily accessed. This is great because each and every peripheral needs a port even if they are wireless. Keyboard, mouse, external hard drives, Ethernet, etc. are all in need of a plug to call home. 
The cord that powers the docking station is VERY heavy and seems somewhat awkward seeing that it is larger and heavier than the dock itself, however since it stays plugged in and can be tucked away, it isn't an issue. The dock itself is a nice sleek and attractive design. It comes with a nice heavy base for vertical use of the dock, to keep it from tipping, but you can also remove the base and use it horizontally if you'd like. I think the vertical use is better since without the base the whole dock moves pretty easily.
The dock also comes with an active DisplayPort to HDMT adapter and a twnty inch Thunderbolt 3 Cable.

thing would work usb c if it was in my new computer but I will get a internal 6 or 4tb sata ive got a sata 1 80 gig in it now.the power cable could be a 1ft longer though. but it works great on my usb 3 computers and usb 2.it will work for me as a back up for my music and movies .

This device couldn't be any simpler to use. Unbox it, connect it to power, and then your computer. Plug in whatever SATA drive you have and you're in business. I've used numerous external adapters in my career but this one is just so easy. Not firmware, no software, no fuss. The only drawback I have with the design is the power adapter is larger than I'd prefer. Not a detriment to the overall working of the device, just that it extends down the power strip in a way that blocks numerous other outlets. If the plug-in could be rotated so that the bulk of the adapter hangs over the side of the power strip instead of down it, that would make this 100% in my book.

Super easy right out of the box

No real negative stuff here.

Keep in mind that this is a powered unit. That means you will need to plug it in before it will work. The transformer is pretty bulky for 2018, & the blades don't retract or flip down; so this isn't a very portable design if you're saving space in your bag.

I will say that the head of the transformer is narrow, that does let it plug in to more power strips, though it sticks out about 5 inches! Plugging it into the wall either up or down will allow room to use the other outlet.

Inserting a SATA drive is pretty easy; Make sure you have the right orientation, slide in, press to click. I have a spare 2.5" drive, so I used that. There is a bit of a gap ("cooling") around the drive, but that means that it can wiggle or sway if bumped. Also note that there isn't any dust protection on this dock/reader to speak of.

I lay mine sideways to limit any dust going inside.

It reads & writes great on the tower as well as the lap top. It read fine via a USB hub or direct insert to one of the board USB connectors. Both 2.0 & 3.0 USB ports work flawlessly.

I wasn't able to get it to boot the laptop (bios change) with the OS that is on the extra drive though, & reached out to them on their (Plugable) web site. They were very helpful in trying to get it to boot, but the bottom line is it may not due to EULA. I don't need it to boot the open drive, I just would have liked to have had it boot it.

It's better not to boot than to lock out your computer.

The dock goes into sleep mode by itself after about 10 minutes, & is very quick to come back out of it. I didn't notice any real lag. I did notice (and it says on the web site) that laptop blue tooth/wifi may effect the unit, but they were not clear as to why, seeing this isn't connected blue tooth I'm not, either. You certainly don't want an external mouse connected to the same USB port or the mouse won't scroll as smoothly. (Shrug), I don't have any issues.

The power & USB cables are small about 3 feet. Depending on your computer configuration (laptop) should be ok, but you may need to juggle for your tower.
There aren't any mounting holes for it to be your wireless drive over the net (WiFi), unless you get a longer USB cable. Which is an easy fix, of course.

Finally, there isn't any fan cooling, it's by air flow & dissipation, so it will get hot if you do a bunch of reading & writing. It's pretty wide at the base, so it isn't going to tip over easily, & it is footed with little pads for a fair grip.

Up to 8Tb is good

I am reviewing Plugable brand USBC-SATA-V Drive Dock External - 1 x Total Bay - 1 x 2.5/3.5 Bay - Serial ATA/600 - USB 3.1 USB 3.1 GEN 2 10GBPS that I received as a Spark Reviewer. I first noticed, as I took it out of the box, that it was very lightweight but sturdy. Also, it is quite compact. This product is really cool and EXTREMELY easy to set up: literally Plug & Play. How I used it: it's playing the role of an FTP directory that I eventually configured within my DMZ...BUT...a novice can set this up for a simple home network access to an external drive...First, just Plug & Play to the USB ports on your router...Next, simply go to the Web Interface of your Router, and set up external storage (by the way, in the pictures, my current drive I marked in brown, and the new drive I have marked in blue)...Once you're done setting up the external drive via your router, you should be able to see it from your pc or laptop. The other great thing about it is that it has a flap at the top that adjusts for smaller HDDs. For some people, it's just a matter of plug and Play to your laptop or pc. Now, here's the thing, it can handle 10 GBPS depending on the SATA you use with it. For someone who has to back up a lot of data, this device works great. I highly recommend the Plugable brand USBC-SATA-V Drive Dock External - 1 x Total Bay - 1 x 2.5/3.5 Bay - Serial ATA/600 - USB 3.1 USB 3.1 GEN 2 10GBPS to anyone. It's easy to use, compact and sturdy, convenient, and works!

Really great for data backup

I had a laptop go kaput and wanted to retrieve data off the hard drive, so I was eager to try out the Plugable SATA dock. It looked so simple to use, just line up the pins and stand the hard drive in the dock. I was able to remove the hard drive from my old laptop, but for some reason the pins didn't seem to be lining up. So I contacted Plugable for support using their email form. Their rep got back in touch within 24 hours and after some conversing and sending pictures of the pins on my hard drive, he answered my questions and fixed the problem! It turns out I had missed a step and not taken the hard drive out of the metal tray, which was something I had not realized needed to be done. The tray was preventing the pins from fully connecting to the dock. Once I got the hard drive connected in the dock I was easily able to claim ownership of my old files and transfer them to the new laptop. Data transfer was pretty fast, too. I'm very happy with this product.

Excellent customer support

This Plugable Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station does what it is says and is very easy to setup. I have my laptop tv monitor and 2 external hard drives hooked up to this and it works very well. It also saveme some power outlet spaces because it calso chargers through the port. I don not knoe what all laptops this is compatible with but i do have a Mac book pro and it works with that. Also the tv monitor is a 32 inch samsung smart tv and it works on that. The external hard drives are both 
1tb Toshiba brand that works perfectly. It was very easy to set up and plug devices together and windows naturally install drivers for these devices. Setup was quick and easy to see that every works fine. I am very happy with this particularly docking station, especially if since i needed to hav multiple devices hooked up.

Plugable Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station w/60W Host

Pros: I've only worked with this Plugable SATA hard drive dock a few days dock a few days now, but I'm mighty impressed with its performance. 

Obviously I received this device for one reason, and one reason only, and that was to test run different linux/unbuntu operating systemsI have purchased a SSD for this purpose . It hasn't disappointed me in that regard, and has worked flawlessly. While I haven't benchmarked its performance it's obvious that it is considerably faster than USB 3.0. There's simply no comparison. I've also been using the device for moving/copying large chunks of data between my system's SSDs & HDDS and have used both of those types of drives as well in the unit. I also use the device for my disk-cloning operations that I use for comprehensive backups of my system (frequently on a daily basis).

The device is nicely designed and it's quite compact , 
It also includes the powere adapter, and 1x 3' USB-C to USB-C and 1x 3" USB-C to USB-type A cables. The unit itself will support 2 1/2 " and 3 1/2 i" SATA 1 I/II/III drives 

Cons: None that I have encountered 

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended if your system can support USB 3.1 capability

Great HD Dock

I received this product under the Spark reviewer program. I have been in the market to purchase a hard drive dock, so I thought I would give this one a try. I have several old hard drives laying around that I need to remove some items from. The HDD that I used was from a 2004 HP laptop. The dock will take 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives, everything was plug and play. The dock is 5.5 inches wide by 3 inches in depth and about 2.75 inches tall. It feels light but solid, the power cord is 5 foot in length and the USB cable are about 3 foot long. It came with two cables a USB-A to USB-C that is 3.1 compatible and a USB-C to USB-C. I have used this dock on a USB 2.0 port with no issues and on my laptop with a 3.0 port, worked on both with no problems. The laptop drive did not vibrate or move while I was accessing the files on it in the dock. There is a USB-C, power supply port and a on/off switch on the back. Insert the drive in the dock connect the cable and power cord, turn it on and go. There is a bright blue light on the top of the dock that indicates that your live. I gained access to all my old files and programs with out any problems, took some old music off and transferred it to my desktop. I have only used it a few times, but it has performed flawless for me.
